What is the purpose of a treadmill stress test? What to Expect
A treadmill stress test can also be called an exercise stress test. The test is used to determine if there is a lack of blood flow to the heart and know what level of physical activity that is right for you.
Your doctor may order it to find out if:
If you have an irregular heartbeat.
If your symptoms are related to your heart.
How hard you should exercise when you are joining a cardiac rehabilitation or exercise program.
How should I prepare for my treadmill stress test?
Please do not eat anything 2 hours before the test. You may have juice or water at any time. Diabetic patients may have a piece of dry toast and some fruit before the test.
Take your medications at your usual time. Please bring a list of your current medications.
Wear comfortable footwear, appropriate for brisk exercise on a treadmill. No boots, heels, sandals or flip-flops.
Family members are allowed to accompany you to the test but are restricted to the office waiting room.
Please shower before your appointment to reduce the spread of bacteria to our equipment.
No lotions or body creams should be used on the day of testing. Deodorant is ok.
Your total test time will vary but usually, takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Exercise on the treadmill will vary from patient-to-patient.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE WHERE YOU WILL HAVE YOUR TEST.
